Air force sent government to buy 33 new aircraft from Russia amidst ongoing dispute from China
Amid ongoing tensions with China in eastern Ladakh, the Indian

These include 21 MiG-29 and 12 Su-30MKI aircraft from Russia. Government
sources said that the Air Force had been working for this for the last few
days, but now it has been given momentum. It will cost 6000 crores to buy the
aircraft. Its proposals will be given to the Ministry of Defense next week.

The source said the proposal included the acquisition of 12
Su-30 MKIs, which would replace the aircraft lost by the Air Force in various
accidents. India placed orders for 272 Su-30 fighter jets in different batches
over a period of 10 to 15 years. Senior officials feel that this number of
aircraft is sufficient for heavy service.
The Indian Air Force which is planning to acquire 21 MiG-29s
are from Russia. It has offered to sell these aircraft to help the Air Force
meet the need for new fighter jets. The Air Force has conducted a study to
check if the MiG-29's airframes on offer are long enough to operate and they
have been found to be in almost new condition.
The MiG-29 is flown by the Air Force and pilots are familiar
with it, but Russia offers are different. The Air Force has three squadrons of
MiG-29s which need to be upgraded.
The mission of
the Indian Air Force is defined by the Armed Forces Act 1947, the Constitution
